Video Overlay Board Connections

This page gives instructions for the connection of our video overlay boards to power, video in and video out.

Power and Video Connections

The positions for the connection of power, video in and video out are clearly marked on the video overlay board shown in insert A below right. A 9 - 12V DC regulated power supply should be connected to the points marked +12V and 0V as shown in inserts B and C, close up, below right. Care should obviously be taken in connecting the power supply. Although the designated power connection points are protected against accidental reverse polarity connection, connecting the power elsewhere on the board will result in its failure. Our warranty specifically excludes failure due to improper connections. Please ensure that all soldering or other connection work is done in accordance with these instructions.

The video connections shown in this example are made with screened coaxial cable suitable for video signals. The lapped screen which carries the video ground from the camera is connected to the video ground on the board. Care should be taken to ensure that the video grounds and power ground are connected separately.

5V Power Connections

The 9 - 12V DC regulated power supply is reduced to 5V DC by the 1A switch mode regulator on the video overlay board. This 5V output is available to power either a GPS module, a PC keyboard or user designed circuit. The connection point for the 5V output is shown in the highlighted insert below left, marked 5V. WARNING: There is no polarity protection on the 5V output. Short circuiting this point on the board to ground, either directly or via the attached circuit, will damage or destroy the video overlay circuit. The warranty is void in such cases. The board may also be powered from an external circuit with a 5V power supply connected to this point.

Serial Connections

The video overlay board provides clearly marked RS232 connection points highlighted in the insert below left. These are shown connected bottom left. The TX (transmit) and RX (receive) refer to the overlay board signals. Connections from these points should be made to a PC, PDA or GPS receiver cable. The PC or GPS serial TX line, shown as red below, should be connected to the overlay board at the point marked RX. The PC or GPS serial RX line, shown as yellow below, should be connected to the overlay board at the point marked TX. The serial ground should be connected at the point marked GND. If the wires from the board are terminated with a male or female DB9 connector this should be connected as shown below.

Serial Connection Points

DB9 cable signals
Signal Male Pin No. Female Socket No.
RS232 TX Pin 3 Socket 2
RS232 RX Pin 2 Socket 3
GND Pin 5 Socket 5

RS232 Serial Connections

TTL Serial Connections

The 5V TTL serial connection points are highlighted in the insert top left. These points should be used to connect either a microcontroller or GPS module to the board. The point marked RB1 is the board TTL RX. This is the point that should be connected to the GPS data out TX line, shown in red above right. The point marked RB2 is the board TTL TX. This should be connected to the GPS data in RX line, shown in yellow above right. The ground connection should made to the point marked GND.

GPS Board Button Controls

The GPS video overlay program is controlled by two buttons. These buttons should be normally open momentary push to make switches. Each button when closed should connect one of the points marked RB6 (SELECT) and RB7 (ADVANCE) on the board to ground, marked GND. The button connection points are shown below left and with soldered connections below right. For the function of each button please refer to the description of GPSBOXPLUS or the GPSBOARD documentation.

RTCKBD Keyboard Connections

To connect the RTCKBD video overlay board to a PS/2 connector follow the layout and example below.

RTCKBD

PS/2 Connector pin out

Pin No. Signal Board Connection Point
1 N/C
2 5V 5V
3 N/C
4 DATA RB3
