Character Set Definition

Please note that the information on this page refers to the PROJRS232, PROJTTL and OSDSER units which run the serial interface command program. These are the only units which allow the user to modify the character set in the way described below.
Character set editor
The character set editor can be downloaded from the Maxim website. Download the EVKIT software zip file. Unzip the file and run install.exe to install the program. This program is also included on the on screen display example software CD. When the software is run select the standalone mode from the initial dialog box as shown below. Then select the third tab labelled "Character Memory File Builder". The other two tabs can be ignored as they are only used for the Maxim evaluation board.

When the Character Memory File Builder tab is first selected the defaultCM.mcm file will be automatically loaded into the character list as shown below. To edit another file select "Open Character Memory from File..." and select the *.mcm file with the desired character set. On the example CD the font files are in the Font Tools directory.

To edit a character or create a new one, first select the character position in the character list on the left with the cursor. When selected the character will be shown in the Edit Character pane on the right. Each pixel of the character can be set to white, black or transparent by clicking on the pixel position. This allows the character to be drawn. When the chararcter editing has been completed. Press the save character button to save the edited character to the character list.

The Character_Memory_Tools menu contains options to edit the individual characters and the character set. Use the copy and paste options to move characters between different positions in the character set. The edited character set can be saved to an mcm file from the File menu.

Writing the character set to the Project Board
The font editor software can open, edit and save the mcm character set files but it cannot download these to the project board. To do this a simple Windows console program is provided on the on screen display example software CD in the Font Tools directory. To use this program you must first edit the test_fontset.bat batch file in the same directory which contains instructions for the usage of the fontsetting program. The batch file must be edited to match the serial port the project board is connected to, the baud rate set on the project board, the font file to be written to the board and the character number to be written. The batch file is shown below.

To run the batch file simply double click on it in windows explorer, as shown below, and the character set in the mcm font file will be written to the project board.
